Moldova banned Kosovo tennis players to take part in Fed Cup

Moldavia nuk lejon përfaqësuesen e Kosovës në tenis të merr pjesë në Fed Cup

13 June 2017

Kosovo Women’s Tennis team will not take part in this year’s Fed Cup held in Moldova in coming days. The Kosovo team’s participation was banned the Moldovan state as organizer of the Fed Cup of Group III of the European and African zone.
In the official statement given by the Moldova Tennis Federation it is said that despite their great efforts as a federation they have failed to persuade Moldovan government officials to give entry visas to the Kosovo team with reasoning that Moldova’s state has not recognized Kosovo as a state!
This has become a flagrant violation of the regulation of the organization of the competitions under the umbrella of the International Tennis Federation (ITF). ITF as the watchdog of the largest team event of states such as the Fed Cup, signs a memorandum with the organizing federation that in this case is Moldova that will allow participation of all states without any conditionality.
Moldova fails to comply with this regulation by doing great injustice to Kosovo’s representative of Fed Cup Team. The Kosovo representative was made up of very good Kosovar tennis players who continue their tennis career in European countries. Donika Bashota, Adrijana Lekaj and Liridona Murati along with the best tennis player from Kosovo, Blearta Ukëhaxhaj, under the leadership of Coach Arben Islami, had a great desire to represent Kosovo in the Fed Cup. Their dream was unfortunately not accomplished because of the discriminatory and offensive actions of a state of Moldova.
Kosovo last year participated for the first time in the Fed Cup that was held in Ulcinj, where it had shown a very good result by triumphing in two matches,  against Iceland and Mozambique.
